WebQuest / Quiz #1 (Version B)



Quiz #1

Introduction

In BIN-04, Reading Skills 1, and now in BIN-08, Reading Skills 2, we have studied and will continue to work with short stories. The idea behind this is to get familiar with the fundamentals of fiction and story-telling. In order to start using your reading blogs you have already created for this course, you will research about Elizabeth van Steenwyk (1928 - ) and her story entitled “Something Funny,” a story that eludes into the sci-fi dreams of one of its characters.

Task

This pre-blogging activity will help you know about Ms. van Steenwyk, and her literary work for children and young adults. You will have a week to analyze here story, and then prepare your blog post with your own analysis. You will work with this story thoroughly to achieve what is required from you to do.

Process

To start getting ready for your blogging which is going to be your Quiz #1, you are to work individually or take some time to get together with one of your peers to discuss what the story is about, it conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution.

While you develop this reading task and look for information to complete it, try to answer the following questions that must be overtly answered in your blog post.

Entitle your blog entry as “Something Funny: Story Analysis.”

Please, insert the author’s picture, or something else that illustrates the story background or theme.

Provide a short summary of Ms. van Steenwyk’s literary biography.

Include your own summary of Something Funny in your own words in no more than a five-sentence paragraph.

Analyze each part of the plot:
a.   Conflict present in the story
b.   Rising action or most important events in the story sequence
c.   Identification of the story’s climax
d.   Statement of the resolution

Analyze the story’s characters in both dimensions: physical characteristics and psychological traits (Extend yourself as much as possible in the description.)

Identify the irony present in this story.

State whether you like the story or not in a five-sentence paragraph. (Please provide detailed information to validate your opinion.)

BIN-08 WebQuest Quiz 1: Three Hundred Pesos

Introduction

In the previous course and in this class we have been studying different short stories to get familiar with the fundamentals of fiction and story-telling. In order to start using the blogs you have created for this class, you will research about Manuela Williams Crosno (1905-1977) and his short story entitled, "Three Hundred Pesos," a story that seems to take place in New Mexico.


Task

This pre-blogging activity will help you know about Ms. Crosno and her literary work. You will have a week to analyze her chosen story, and prepare your posts for your blog. You will have to analyze the story thoroughly to accomplish what you are required below.


Process

In order to continue to use the blogs you have created for this class, you will research about Nathaniel Hawthorne and his short story entitled, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment."

This pre-blogging activity will help you know about Hawthorne and his literary work. You will have a week to analyze his chosen story, and prepare your posts for your blog. You will have to analyze the story thoroughly to accomplish what you are required below.
